365 Days to a New Economy

It’s not news to most of us that unemployment rates are at an all-time high, there is a collapse in new home building, an increasing number of home mortgage foreclosures, decreasing Gross Domestic Product, a significant rise in the number of families living in public shelters, an alarming decrease in the availability of our natural resources, and the list goes on.

Because the mainstream media is biased and designed to induce a state of fear (or scarcity), we rarely hear about the plethora of positive efforts happening to change the current state of affairs. In reality, there are many individuals, groups and organizations out there doing incredible work towards the realization of a morecaring, sustainable economy. For example, did you know that there is a “New Economy Working Group” (NEWGroup) acting to reframe the economic policy debate to address the social and environmental imperatives and opportunities of the 21st Century and that there are now hundreds of thousands of nongovernmental organizations working to change patterns of poverty and economic injustice, preserve our environment, change unhealthy lifestyles, promote nonviolent conflict resolution, and protect the human rights of children, women and men?

So you see, we have choices here. We can choose to immerse ourselves in the fear-based drama of the mainstream media, do nothing, and hopelessly surrender our fate to the demise of the crumbling economy. Or we can learn more about what is being done to remedy the situation and find out what we can do to help.
